Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat Trout - Extinct to Thriving
The Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat Trout are the largest native Trout Species in North America. Located on the Paiute Indian Reservation, just 40 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada.
Pyramid Lake is a stunning desert oasis, the last remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan which formed in the Ice Age (2.5 million years ago) and used to cover most of northwest Nevada, northeastern California, and southern Oregon. At its peak,12,700 years ago, it covered over 8,500 square miles.
Approximately 8,000 years ago, Pyramid Lake settled in at its present size of 27 miles long, 11 miles wide, and 350 feet deep and is the largest natural lake in Nevada. It is part of the Lahontan Basin that includes Tahoe, Eagle, and Walker Lakes, as well as, the Truckee, Carson, Walker, Humboldt, and Susan Rivers.
Beyond its ecological wonders and great fishing, Pyramid Lake holds immense cultural significance for the Paiute Indian Tribe, who have called it home for the past 600 years (Human remains date back as far as 4,000 years ago). The lake is central to Paiute traditions and legends, enriching the area’s ecological and cultural tapestry.
Pyramid Lake is a Unique Ecosystem
Pyramid Lake is more than just a fishing destination; it’s a one-of-a-kind ecosystem with mesmerizing blue turquoise waters, a captivating pyramid-like desert backdrop, and a 2,600-acre Bird Sanctuary that is home to a myriad of bird species, including eagles, ospreys, and white pelicans.
True to its name, Pyramid Lake is flanked by the distinct pyramid-shaped formations that rise dramatically from its shores. These limestone structures, known as tufa formations, add a touch of mystique to the scenery.
Home of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and other Diverse Fish Species
Pyramid Lake is home to five different fish species:
- Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
- Cui-ui
- Tui Chub
- Tahoe Sucker
- Sacramento Perch
Click here to learn more about Pyramid Lake fish species.
When John Fremont “discovered” the Lake in 1848 (giving it the English name “Pyramid” from the pyramid-shaped Tufa desert formations) he came upon a local shoreside Indian settlement that presented him with extraordinary sized “Salmon Trout” (two to four feet).
The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout were not the main dish of the local Paiute Indians, but, the Cui-ui sucker fish. The Cui-ui come to shore in great numbers during mid-spring, for a two or three-week period, and were caught and used as food by the Indians for the rest of the year (some Cui-ui can get as big as well reaching 10 Lbs.) The Northern Paiute Indians called the Lake Kooyooe Pa’a Panunadu after the Cu-ui.
The Truckee River feeds Pyramid Lake
The Truckee River, which gets most of its water from Lake Tahoe, feeds Pyramid Lake its water. Pyramid Lake has no outflows, resulting in high evaporation rates and increased salinity, which is approximately one-sixth of ocean levels.
Breeding Ground for Bait Fish
Pyramid Lake has very large amounts of bait fish – the Cui-ui and Tui Chub. These bait fish travel in groups forming giant “bait balls” (safety by numbers). Consequently, the predatorial Lahontan Cutthroat Trout gorge themselves on these bait fish. These ideal feeding conditions allow these fish to grow to enormous sizes, exceeding 25 pounds in weight and lengths of over 3 feet.
The Pyramid Lake Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Story
The story of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Pyramid Lake is one of horrifying extinction, due to the turn of the Century (1900s) mismanagement of an amazing fishery, to brilliant recovery from modern-day conservation and science.
Commercial fishing fleets were commonplace in the late 1800s and unregulated overfishing flourished to meet the hungry demands of the American West. Additionally, to meet the ever-growing water demands of the local Carson Valley farming community, the Derby Dam was built in 1905 to divert water from the Truckee River.
By 1938, the last Lahontan Cutthroat spawned on the Truckee River, leaving Pyramid Lake void of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout by 1941.
A hatchery program started in the late 1940s reintroduced other strains of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout to the Lake, but, none of these strains produced the giants of the past. It was not until the 1970’s, that a strain of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout from Summit Lake in Nevada, started to see some gains in size from 3 to 15 Lbs.
Fortunately, in 1975, in a small creek in western Utah, a tiny cutthroat trout, with unusual markings was discovered, and it turned out to have the lineage of the original giant Lahontan Cutthroat Trout of Pyramid Lake.
After years of DNA confirmation, the hatchery program expanded and the Pilot Peak strain of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout was introduced to Pyramid Lake in 2006. The Pilot Peak strain has thrived and is the giant that has made Pyramid Lake a world-famous fishery today.

Common Questions for Your Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Trip
How do you fly fish in Pyramid Lake Nevada?
There are two different ways to fly fish in Pyramid Lake Nevada:
- Fly fishing off the shore using Ladders to suspend you above the cold water (wearing waders) and casting into an offshore self.
- Fly Fishing From a boat – This is the method we exclusively use for our anglers.
Where can I fish at Pyramid Lake?
Pyramid Lake is very big, 27 miles long and 11 miles wide, and figuring out where you can fly fish at Pyramid Lake can be a challenge due to the vast size of the place. Our years of experience have taught us that the fish tend to school in certain areas of the lake depending on the time of year. The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout moves often throughout the year, but, they have predictable tendencies.
We exclusively fly fish from boats because we are not subject to any significant geographic restrictions (other than those stated in the Pyramid Lake Regulations below). We have access to fly fish approximately 80% of Pyramid Lake, either deep or shallow waters, depending on where the fish are schooling. Unlike shore fly fishermen who can only fish on the West side of the Lake in shallow waters. Additionally, our state-of-the-art fish finding electronic equipment allows us to better locate the fish. Depending on where the fish are at, and their depth, we have developed several successful fishing techniques to land them.

The Pyramid Lake fish hatchery is located on the south side of the beach, which tends to attract a lot of fish, but, also crowds of fly fishing anglers.
Regarding boat fly fisherman, we have numerous areas depending on the time of year and where the fish are schooling – for example the Month of October it would be the Hells Kitchen located on the north east side of Pyramid Lake,
What is the Best Time of Year to Fish Pyramid Lake?
The season starts on October 1 and ends on June 30th. Because we fly fish from boats, we are able to locate the fish throughout the year as they move. So there is no best time of year to fish Pyramid Lake because our boat fly fishing is pretty good all year round (weather and wind permitting). With that being said, it does appear that the first 3 weeks of October and the Month of June can be very active for Boat fly fishing when compared to other months. Check out our Blog, we have written several posts about how the fishing can change throughout the season.
Regarding shore fishermen, the fish typically don’t move into the shore area until November and start to school away from it by the end of March.

Why are the Pyramid Lake trout so big?
Pyramid Lake has a high alkaline (salinity) level equal to 1/6 of the ocean. This water is a perfect place to breed large amounts of bait fish. As the old saying goes, “Big fish eat smaller fish,” It is not unusual in the Fall months to see enormous “bait balls” of fish that the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout feed upon. In other words, the Pyramid Lake Trout are so big because there is a ton of bait fish available for them to gorge themselves on.
Best Pyramid Lake fly fishing Techniques?
We believe the following are the 3 best Pyramid Lake fly fishing techniques. Deploying these techniques is dependent upon the conditions and depth of the schooling Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.
- Traditional Indicator fly fishing with a 2 rig fly setup.
- The Retrieve Strip technique with a full sinking line.
- The “Dangle” technique for deep water fly fishing. Similar to “jigging”, with a 2 rig setup.
What is the Best fly Pattern for Pyramid Lake?
We use a variety of different flies depending on the technique that are using. Typically, with the Indicator we are using a nymph (chironomid) on top and either a steamer or balanced leech on the bottom. For the Retrieve Strip technique, we use streamers, balanced leeches, and several local flies such as the Popcorn Beetle and a Boobie. And for our “Dangle” technique, we use a 2 rig setup, with a minnow or nymph on top and a balanced leech or streamer on the bottom.
There is no “Best Fly Pattern for Pyramid Lake”, but without a doubt, there are some that work significantly better than others depending on the time of year.
- October: Balanced Leeches
