This is precisely why the month of March stands out as a golden period for anglers aiming their sights on Pyramid Lake in Nevada. The Magic of March at Pyramid Lake

Unique Lake Ecology

Pyramid Lake is no ordinary body of water. It’s a remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan that covered much of Nevada during the last ice age. This high-desert lake is home to the world-renowned Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, a species that not only grows to incredible sizes but also has a historical significance and a unique place in the ecosystem here.

The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Spawn

March is a pivotal time at Pyramid Lake because it aligns with the early stages of the spawning season. These trout, which can grow upwards of 20 pounds, become more active and, consequently, more susceptible to the skilled fly fisherman’s lure. The increased activity offers anglers a greater opportunity to land a trophy fish, making March an optimal time for those seeking not just the thrill of the catch but also a potentially record-breaking experience

Weather and Water Conditions

As winter’s grip loosens, March brings a blend of weather conditions to Pyramid Lake. While the lake’s high-desert location can produce variable conditions, March often sees a mix of mild days interspersed with the tail end of winter weather patterns. This variability can work in an angler’s favor, stirring the lake’s waters and encouraging the trout to feed more aggressively. Furthermore, the transitioning weather creates a dynamic fishing environment where one day’s challenge is the next day’s triumph.

Strategic Advantage

For the fly fisher, March offers strategic advantages. The lake’s level begins to rise from winter snowmelt, expanding the accessible shoreline and creating new habitats for the trout to explore. Fly fishermen can capitalize on these changing conditions by adapting their techniques and fly patterns to match the evolving feeding behaviors of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. From streamers that mimic baitfish to nymphs that replicate aquatic insects, the diversity of effective fly patterns makes every cast a new adventure.

Crafting the Perfect March Setup: Gear and Tactics

Rod and Reel

In March, we deploy two methods to fly fish:  Indicator and Retrieve fly fishing. It is important to note that Lacey’s guide service supplies all essential fly fishing tackle for your needs – everything from fly rods, reels, lines, and flies.

Indicator Fly Fishing

We use a 7-weight 11 ft. Switch fly rod.   The heavier rod allows for casting larger flies and handling the potentially strong winds that can arise. Coupled with a matching reel, floating shooting fly line, a shooting head, and with leader ranging from 15 lbs to 8 lbs. This setup offers the versatility needed to pursue the large Lahontan Cutthroat Trout under varying conditions.  Our leader length is dependent on the depth we are fishing, anywhere from 4 feet to 15 ft., because the fish move closer to shore this time of year. Our preferred fly setup is a two-fly rig combo of Midges and Balanced Leech patterns.

Retrieve/Strip Fly Fishing Method

We use an 8-weight 9 ft. fly fishing rod, with an appropriate reel, and a full sinking line (30 ft.) and shooting line. Our leader is short, ranging from 4 feet to 6 feet, coupled with a two-rig fly setup – typically a Popcorn Beetle on top and a Midnight Cowboy trailing.

Pyramid Lake is famous for its unusual and effective Ladder fly fishing. March is a time of year when you will see the West side of Pyramid Lake’s shoreline with hundreds of fishermen standing on Ladders casting into its beautiful waters.  While fishing from the shore or atop a ladder has its traditional charm and effectiveness, utilizing a boat during March at Pyramid Lake offers distinct advantages that can significantly enhance your fly fishing experience.

The Advantage of fly Fishing from boat at Pyramid Lake

Access to More Waters - Mobility and Exploration

Due to Pyramid Lake regulations, Ladder, and shore fishermen are limited to only fish on the West side of Pyramid Lake and its shallow waters.  Our boats allow us to explore significantly more areas of the Lake (90% of it) and give us the ability to fish in numerous spots throughout the day.

With a boat, you’re not confined to a single location. This mobility lets you explore various fishing spots and depths increasing your chances of finding active feeding areas and responding quickly to changing weather or water conditions.

Reduced Crowding

Pyramid Lake can get quite crowded along the shorelines, especially during peak seasons. Fishing from a boat offers a reprieve from the crowds, allowing for a more serene and focused fishing experience.

Crowding on the shore is very real. Its not unusual to see fisherman setting up there Ladders as early as 3am for a fishing session that starts at sunrise.

Enhanced Safety and Comfort

Fishing from a boat, especially with the proper safety equipment, can be more comfortable and safer than standing for extended periods in very cold water or navigating slippery rocks. This is especially true in March when the weather can be unpredictable.

Preparation Tips for Success
