The 2026–2027 Pyramid Lake fishing season opened October 1 with exceptional trophy trout fishing. During the week days, Lacey’s Guide Service’s three boats reported numerous Lahontan cutthroat trout exceeding 20 pounds, making this an exciting start to the season for anglers pursuing giant fish.
Largest Bait Balls We've Seen in Over a Decade
One of the biggest stories of the October opener has been the extraordinary abundance of baitfish. Our captains are reporting some of the largest bait balls we’ve witnessed on Pyramid Lake in more than 10 years.
These massive concentrations of baitfish have created an incredible natural food supply for the lake’s trophy Lahontan cutthroat trout. With so much bait available, the fish appear to be feeding heavily, making them less inclined to strike artificial flies.
As a result, overall catch numbers have been somewhat lower than in previous October openers. However, the size and quality of the fish being caught have been exceptional.
Deep-Water Fly Fishing Producing Trophy Trout
The deep-water dangle technique has been the standout method during the opening days of October.
Our three experienced captains have been consistently targeting trophy Lahontan cutthroat trout using specialized deep-water fly fishing presentations, with the dangle technique accounting for most of our 20-pound-plus catches.
While the abundance of natural baitfish has made fishing more challenging at times, the rewards have been outstanding. The opportunity to connect with a giant Lahontan cutthroat trout continues to make Pyramid Lake one of the most exciting trophy trout fisheries in the country.
