I’m Captain Hans Grotewold, founder of Lacey’s Guide Service, and a full-time professional Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Guide. If you’re a still-water fly fisherman who is interested in a Pyramid Lake Boat Charter and has a passion for landing the elusive Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, you’ve come to the right place.

Additionally, to guide on the lake, you have to be a licensed United States Coast Guard Captain.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Guides and Their Unique Fishing Environment

Pyramid Lake holds a special place in my heart. I vividly remember my first visit here as a young angler. The serene landscape, the crystal-clear waters, and the thrill of landing a massive Lahontan Cutthroat Trout made me fall in love with this remarkable fishery.

Most of the Pyramid Lake fishing guides are here because of the amazing beauty of the Pyramid Lake, and its giant Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, and they truly want to provide an unforgettable experience for their anglers.  The Pyramid Lake Boat Charter fly fishing guide community is quite small, with only four Pyramid Lake fishing guide service companies offering fly fishing from a boat, and Lacey’s guide service is the only one offering two boats.

Pyramid Lake is unique because of its geological history, the only home of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the largest cutthroat species in the world. The lake’s clarity, frigid temperatures, and underwater topography make it an ideal habitat for these massive trout.

Pyramid Lake Nevada - Beautiful Morning

“When I first started guiding here, I was amazed by the ancient feel of this place. The lake, formed millions of years ago, was part of the ancient Lake Lahontan, is not just a fishing spot; it’s a living testament to history. The Paiute Tribe, which has inhabited the place for the past 600 years, has shared their ancient wisdom with me, and it has enriched my experience as a guide.”

The Role of a Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Guide

“One unforgettable day, I took a group of anglers to a spot I knew held the biggest Lahontan Cutthroat. The fish were elusive, but with a little guidance and the right fly, we hooked into some real monsters. The thrill in my clients’ eyes was priceless.”

Pyramid Lake Fishing Guides: Expertise in Fly Selection and Techniques

Pyramid Lake Flies -Laceys Guide Service

“Pyramid Lake is known for its particular challenges. The cutthroats have unique feeding patterns. Over the years, I’ve learned which fly patterns and strategies work best. Whether it’s streamers, woolly buggers, or midges, your guide will have you covered.”

Fly Selection: Patterns and Strategies

Your Pyramid Lake fly fishing guide will introduce you to the flies that work best in Pyramid Lake. They’ll help you understand the nuances of when to use them and why.  We typically use a two-rig setup for all of our techniques.

Streamers, Woolly Buggers, Balanced Leeches, Popcorn Beetles, and Chironomids (Midges)

These are go-to patterns for Pyramid Lake. Large, flashy streamers such as Wooly Buggers (Midnight Cowboy) and Balanced Leeches mimic the size and action of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout’s preferred prey.  Additionally, “local flies” such as the “Popcorn Beetle” and the “Boobie” can be deadly at certain times of the year.  The go-to standard still-water two-rig midge setups also work really well.

Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Techniques

We use 3 different fly fishing techniques at Pyramid Lake, depending on the depth and where the fish are eating.

1. Indicator Nymphing

When the fish are feeding on midges near the bottom, indicator nymphing is the technique to use. Your guide will show you how to set up and present your flies effectively. In many instances, a double rig setup can be very effective. The flies we use are typically some form of Nymph on Top and Balanced Leech on the bottom. Or we just employ the use of a two-Midge setup.

2. Retrieve Striping

With an 8-weight Rod and intermediate or full sinking line, we will go after the fish depending on their depth and where they are schooling.  Our fly selection can range from Streamers, Balanced Leeches, Popcorn Beetles, or the Boobie fly.

3. The Dangle

When the fish are over 30 feet deep, we employ our Dangle Technique.  Similar to “jigging”, we typically use a 7-weight Switch Rod and a 2-rig setup that includes various flies – mostly streamers and balanced leeches.

Depth and Presentation

Understanding how deep to fish and the speed of your retrieve is a skill that can make the difference between a strike and a missed opportunity.

Pyramid Lake Casting Techniques

Fly fishing is an art, and the techniques can be as intricate as a dance. Your guide will refine your casting skills, helping you deliver the perfect presentation to tempt the trout.  Depending on the conditions, we use one of the 3 fly fishing casting techniques below:

  • The Basic fly cast or Overhead cast
  • The Roll Cast
  • Switch rod or Spey rod Cast

Setting Your Hook

Big fish require a firm to hard set when we employ a “traditional trout set” for our Indicator and Dangle fly fishing techniques and a medium to firm hook set when we are using the Retrieving or Strip set technique.
