Valentine’s Day 2021 – Quinn Pauley’s Giant Trout
On February 14, 2021, angler Quinn Pauley landed a 39-inch Lahontan cutthroat trout estimated to weigh nearly 30 pounds while fly fishing Pyramid Lake from a ladder.
Although the trout was not officially weighed, experienced anglers estimated the fish to be just under the 30-pound mark. The trout was carefully released back into Pyramid Lake.
October 2023 – A 31-Pound Giant
In October 2023, angler Klay Gustin landed a 31-pound, 4-ounce Lahontan cutthroat trout, one of the largest documented fish caught in Pyramid Lake in nearly a century (conventional fishing tackle).
The fish was properly documented and released back into the lake.
March 2023 – IGFA Women’s World Record
In March 2023, angler Kesley Gallagher set the IGFA Women’s 16-lb Tippet Class World Record with a 21-pound, 8-ounce Lahontan cutthroat trout caught at Pyramid Lake.
The fish was weighed on a certified scale and released after documentation.
Pilot Peak vs Summit Strain Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
Two strains of Lahontan cutthroat trout currently live in Pyramid Lake Nevada: the Pilot Peak strain and the Summit strain.
The Pilot Peak strain is known for reaching the largest sizes. These fish are descendants of the original giant Lahontan cutthroat trout that historically lived in the ancient Lake Lahontan system. Under the right conditions, Pilot Peak trout are capable of growing well beyond twenty pounds.
The Summit strain tends to be smaller and typically averages between 3 and 8 pounds, although larger fish are occasionally caught. This strain of fish is typically more colorful and has an adipose fin located on its back, near the tail fin, behind the dorsal fin.
Today both strains live together in Pyramid Lake, and many fisheries biologists believe that some natural crossbreeding between the two strains may occur. Over time this mixing of genetics could produce trout that combine the growth potential of the Pilot Peak strain with the adaptability of Summit strain fish.
The Summit strain of fish were originally stocked in Pyramid Lake. The stocking of the Pilot Peak Strain came into play around 2007-08. The Summit Strain of fish stopped being stocked around 2022, due to the fact that the Pilot Peak strain are more closely related to the original strain of fish from Pyramid Lake.
