February 2026 at Pyramid Lake delivered one of the most exciting windows of the season—pre-spawn activity, aggressive feeding periods, and some of the best opportunities at truly trophy Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.
As winter begins to transition toward spring, fish behavior changes. Larger trout start moving more, feeding with increased urgency, and positioning in areas that create real opportunities for anglers targeting 20+ pound fish.
For those who understand Pyramid Lake, February is not just another winter month—it’s a prime trophy window.
For anglers looking to take advantage of these conditions, fishing with experienced Pyramid Lake fishing guides at Lacey’s Guide Service can make all the difference when targeting big fish during this critical transition.
February Marks the Pre-Spawn Transition
February is when things start to shift.
Fish begin to:
Move more frequently
Feed more aggressively at times
Show early pre-spawn behavior
Increased Movement = Increased Opportunity
Compared to January:
Fish are less stagnant
Feeding windows can be stronger
More chances at quality fish
This is when you can have:
slower periods… followed by explosive bite windows
Big Fish Window – One of the Best of the Year
February consistently produces some of the largest fish of the season.
Why Bigger Fish Show Now
Pre-spawn energy increases feeding
Fish are at peak weight
Movement creates more encounters
This is one of the best times of year to realistically target:
👉 20+ pound Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
Fish Location – Transition Zones Become Key
In February 2026, fish continued to be found across the lake, including:
Hells Kitchen
The North End
The South End
Key transition areas between deeper and shallower water
Movement Between Depth Zones
Unlike January, where fish hold deeper:
In February:
Fish move between depths
Transition zones become critical
Positioning changes throughout the day
This makes adaptability extremely important.
Best Techniques for February – Indicator Fishing Still Leads
Even with increased movement, indicator fishing remained the most consistent producer in February 2026.
Indicator Still Leads – But Retrieve Starts to Play a Role
While indicator fishing remained the primary producer in February, accounting for roughly 80% of our success, we began to see an important shift as fish transitioned toward pre-spawn behavior.
As the month progressed:
Fish started moving closer to shore
Movement between depth zones increased
Feeding behavior became more aggressive during windows
This is when the retrieve (stripping) began to come into play.
Adjusting Depth Is Critical
February requires more adjustment than January.
We are constantly:
Tweaking depth
Watching fish behavior
Adapting to movement
Small adjustments often lead to big results.
Two-Fly Setup – Continues to Increase Hookups
Running a two-fly setup remains a key part of success.
Benefits:
Covers multiple depths
Matches different food sources
Increases opportunities during feeding windows
When the bite turns on, this setup helps capitalize quickly.
Shoreline Movement – Early Signs of the Transition
One of the biggest indicators of the seasonal shift was fish beginning to:
Move closer to shore
Cruise transition zones
Show early pre-spawn positioning
This movement is subtle at first, but it builds as the month progresses and becomes a major factor heading into March.
Retrieve (Stripping) – 20% of the Bite but Growing
Although still secondary to the indicator, the retrieve accounted for approximately 20% of our success in February.
When we transition into the retrieve, we switch over to a 9-foot 8-weight rod paired with a sinking line, allowing us to effectively cover water and get flies down into the strike zone. This setup is ideal for fishing patterns like the Popcorn Beetle and larger streamers such as the Midnight Cowboy, which can trigger aggressive, reaction-based strikes from fish moving into shallower water. The retrieve allows us to stay active, adjust cadence, and take advantage of fish that are beginning to chase as pre-spawn energy builds.
It was most effective when:
Fish pushed into shallower water
Bait or movement triggered aggressive behavior
Feeding windows opened up
Stripping allows anglers to:
Cover water quickly
Trigger reaction strikes
Take advantage of more aggressive fish
Boat Advantage in February – Staying on Moving Fish
Mobility becomes even more important in February.
Our Pyramid Lake guided fishing trips allow anglers to:
Follow moving fish
Adjust throughout the day
Stay on productive transition zones
Maximize feeding windows
As fish move more, being able to move with them is a major advantage.
