Overview of Pyramid Lake's Unique Fly Fishing Experience
As we are into our 4th fly fishing guide season on Pyramid Lake, December 2024 brings an incredible mix of natural beauty and fishing opportunities. Known for its unique ecosystem and as a prime habitat for native Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the lake has seen impressive fish growth this season. This trend has been developing steadily over the past few years.
Weather Conditions and Appropriate Gear
December at Pyramid Lake offers cold but stable weather, featuring crisp, clear days and chilly nights. Daytime temperatures stay in the low 40s (Fahrenheit), while nights often fall below freezing. Anglers must come prepared with proper gear for these conditions.
Essential Gear for Cold Weather Fishing
When fishing from a boat, wearing layered clothing is essential to staying warm and dry. Start with a fishing bib and a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin. Add an insulating middle layer, such as fleece or wool, and finish with a waterproof, windproof outer layer. Don’t forget a warm hat, gloves, and thermal socks. High-quality waterproof boots are crucial for keeping your feet dry and warm, especially when dealing with splashes or water entering the boat.
Why Are Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Getting Bigger?
The growing size of trout in Pyramid Lake comes from several key factors. Conservation efforts and stocking programs are designed to support their health and growth. The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, especially the Pilot Peak strain, has responded well to these initiatives.
Less Fish = Bigger Fish
Twenty years ago, Pyramid Lake received 1 to 2 million stocked Lahontan Cutthroat Trout annually. This came from the National Lahontan Cutthroat Fish Hatchery and the local Paiute Indian Reservation Hatchery. Most stocked fish belonged to the Summit strain of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. Over time, an additional strain called Pilot Peak was also introduced. The Summit strain typically ranged from 5 to 15 lbs. In contrast, the Pilot Peak strain, more closely related to the lake’s original species, can exceed 20 lbs.
Today, the Pilot Peak strain is recognized as closely related to the lake’s original fish and is the focus of stocking programs. Over the past four years, very few Summit strain Lahontan Cutthroat Trout have been stocked. Instead, nearly 500,000 Pilot Peak strain trout are introduced annually.
Although fewer fish are being stocked than in the past, this can be beneficial. With less competition for food, the fish are growing larger. Estimates suggest they are increasing by about four inches per year.
Diet and Genetic Factors
The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout diet, rich in cui-ui and Tui chub, provides essential nutrients for substantial growth. Catch-and-release regulations also help preserve a strong gene pool, supporting the development of larger fish.
Specific Fly Fishing Techniques for December Success
In December, Pyramid Lake’s water temperature drops, affecting fish behavior and distribution. Lahontan Cutthroat Trout often stay in shallow waters, around 6 to 10 feet deep. Colder temperatures reduce dissolved oxygen in deeper areas, pushing fish toward more oxygen-rich shallows.
Effective Flies and Strategies
The most successful flies in December include:
- Midnight Cowboy: This dark, sparkly streamer is excellent for mimicking the small baitfish that trout feed on during the winter months.
- White Ghost: Its appearance is similar to the local baitfish, making it irresistible to aggressive trout.
- Balanced Leeches: These are effective in colder water, particularly in natural colors like brown and black, to represent the leeches that trout prey on.
- Midges – Every thing from Zebra Midges to various different colored Chironomids.
- Popcorn Beetle – our primary choice if we are going to use the stripping or retrieve technque.
Fly Fishing Techniques
- Indicator Fishing: This technique involves using a floating line with a indicator and a Streamer or Balanced Leech suspended, with a Midge or Chironomids beneath it. The indicator not only maintains the fly at the desired depth but also acts as a strike indicator, signaling when a fish takes the fly. We prefer to use an 11 ft, 7 wt Switch Rod to better improve our casting in windy conditions.
- Retrieve or Stripping: With a intermediate or full sinking line and 8 wt, 9 ft rod.
Advantages of Boat at Pyramid Lake
Fishing from a boat at Pyramid Lake offers key advantages, including access to 90% of the lake. This is especially beneficial in December when mobility improves success rates. Boats allow anglers to reach deeper areas quickly and locate fish schools beyond shore access. Additionally, fishing from a boat is warmer and more comfortable than standing on a ladder or the shore in cold water.
How Colder Weather Can Improve Fishing
Colder weather can improve the fly fishing experience at Pyramid Lake. Reduced algal growth leads to clearer water and better fish visibility. Trout stay active in cold water, feeding aggressively to sustain energy. This makes them more responsive to flies, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
