Lahontan Cutthroat Trout are Moving into the Shallows
Time to Change Our Fly Fishing Techniques
With the first month of the season coming to an end, we are gearing up for the winter and getting very excited about November as this is the time of year that the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout follow the bait balls and move into shore areas of Pyramid Lake. In October, we are mainly fishing the deeper waters of Pyramid Lake, anywhere from 15 to 80 feet deep, and are primarily using our “Dangle” fly fishing technique (similar to jigging). In November, we embrace the shallower waters and primarily use our 11 ft. Switch Rods – set up with an Indicator and a 2-rig fly setup (Indicator fly Fishing) or we use 9 ft 8 wt. rods with a sinking line (Retrieve/Stripping fly fishing).
Time to Change Our Flies
As we change our fly fishing technique, we also transition into using different flies. In October we are primarily using Balanced Leech and Minnow patterns, in November we still use them, but, we also start using different flies such as Tui Chub patterns, Popcorn Beetles, Midnight Cowboy Wooly Buggers, and Midges.
The Enchantment of November
November unveils the heart of angling excitement at Pyramid Lake. As the scorching desert summer gives way to the cool embrace of autumn, the stage is set for an extraordinary fly fishing experience. This is the time of year that the “shore fisherman” start to arrive at Pyramid Lake, establishing beachheads and fishing the shelves off of the beaches with the help of “ladders” that elevate them above the cold temperatures of the water. We, on the other hand, fly fish exclusively from boats that allow us to comfortably escape the cold water and gain access to significantly more fishing spots on the lake than shore anglers.
The November Bounty
A few years back, I had the pleasure of joining a group of fellow anglers for a November outing at Pyramid Lake. The weather was just right, cool enough for comfort but not bone-chilling. We arrived at some of our favored fishing spots along the lake’s northwest side – Pelican Point, Warrior Point, and Monument Rocks.
Picture a crisp November morning, with the lake’s glassy surface mirroring the desert’s stunning beauty. In the distance, the iconic Pyramid Rock stood sentinel. Armed with our fly rods we cast our lines adorned with Balanced Leeches and Chironomid patterns with an indicator on top. The technique was simple yet effective.
The first tug on the line sent a thrill coursing through us, setting the tone for a day of relentless action. The Lahontan Cutthroat trout couldn’t resist. They struck our fly patterns just a few feet from where we were positioned in the crystal-clear waters. We soon lost count, releasing one “Cutt” after another. In several instances, two fish are on our lines at the same time. It was a November day etched in our memories, a testament to the incredible fishing opportunities this month offers.
Stormy November's Treasures
November ushers in the first significant winter storm in Nevada. While some might shy away, seasoned anglers eagerly await this weather phenomenon. The heavy rains and cold temperatures have a remarkable effect on the already “red hot” fishing for trophy Lahontan cutthroat trout at Pyramid Lake.
I vividly recall one November trip when the storm clouds gathered on the horizon. The anticipation among our group was electrifying. These storms bring much-needed precipitation and lower water temperatures, triggering a migration of trout into the shallows.
Our Pyramid Lake fly fishing guide expertise came into play as we strategically positioned our boat so that we could easily cast into the shallows, ready to capitalize on this feeding frenzy. The trout’s voracious appetite was fueled by the bait fish, particularly tui chub, and our choice of fly patterns proved critical.
The Pyramid Lake Fishing Experience
Pyramid Lake offers a plethora of opportunities for anglers in November, making it a haven for both beginners and seasoned fly fishermen. Let’s delve deeper into the aspects that make this experience extraordinary.
The Unique Pyramid Lake Setting
Nestled amidst the Nevada desert, Pyramid Lake is a natural wonder with a unique appeal. The tranquil waters, framed by the iconic Pyramid Rock, create a stunning backdrop for your fishing adventure. November’s cool temperatures add to the allure of the lake’s clear alkaline waters.
Secrets of the Prime Fishing Spots
When it comes to Pyramid Lake fly fishing, knowing the best spots is key to success. Some of the prime locations include (and only accessible by Boat) Hells Kitchen, Anderson Bay, Red Bay, Dago Bay, and Howard’s Bay. Other prime shore-accessible beaches include Pelican Point, Spider Point, Warrior Point, Windless Bay, and Monument Rocks. All of these areas consistently yield remarkable catches, especially during November.
Mastering the Right Fly Fishing Techniques
The Sinking Line and Retrieve
As an angler, I’ve learned that employing the right techniques is crucial. Sandy bottoms are preferred spots for trout. If we are using our Sinking Line Retrieve technique, we cast our flies (streamers or popcorn beetles) as far as possible and allow them to sink before initiating a slow retrieve motion. The visual thrill of a trout striking your fly just a few feet from the boat is an experience every angler dreams of – “The Tug is the Drug”.
Indicator Fly Rig
Lahontan Cutthroat trout, especially in November, can be found at various depths. By adjusting the indicator’s placement, you can target the specific depth at which the trout are actively feeding. This adaptability can significantly increase your chances of a successful catch.
In the event we decide to use our 2-rig fly setup with indicator, we cast out with our Switch Rods, which allows us better stability and strength needed from the torque delivered by these beasts during a fight. We have found the use of Switch Rods improves our chances of landing these giant Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, particularly if we are lucky enough to fight two of them at the same time!
When it comes to enticing Lahontan Cutthroat trout, the fly fishing indicator with a two-rig setup can be a game-changer. This setup consists of a buoyant indicator, often made of foam, and two fly patterns spaced apart on your leader. The indicator allows you to monitor your line’s depth and detect subtle strikes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Unveiling Pyramid Lake Fly Patterns for November
Balanced Leeches & Minnows, Popcorn Beetle, Midnight Cowboy, Tui Chub, and Maholo Midge
November sees the trout actively feeding on Tui chub bait fish, so feed the beast with the Pyramid Lake Balanced Tui Chub fly Pattern, making these patterns highly effective. Natural colors such as greens, browns, tans, and blacks mimic the bait fish. However, don’t underestimate the power of attractor colors, with chartreuse being a consistent favorite. The Popcorn Beetle fly pattern, a local favorite, is an exceptional attractor pattern known to trigger aggressive strikes when retrieved.
As Pyramid Lake moves in this transition period from the fish starting to move into shallower waters, don’t be afraid to start using some Midge fly patterns – The Maholo Midge and Maholo Nymphs are proven winners at Pyramid Lake.
November's Fishing Calendar
Pyramid Lake’s fishing season spans from October 1st to June 30th, offering anglers a wide window of opportunity. While fish can be caught throughout the season, November stands out as one of the most favorable. Late November to early December is particularly consistent, with fish frequently found close to the shore. Winter months may be slower, but they offer the chance to catch substantial fish. Spring heralds the spawning season, with March and April being the most popular but crowded months. Latecomers can still enjoy success in May and June as the larger Pilot Peak strain of Cutthroats returns to the shallows.
Conclusion
November paints a portrait of wonder at Pyramid Lake, Nevada.
